Roweltown – Crossings Inn
This is the Crossings Inn, the winner of Channel 4’s ‘Four in a Bed’ and run by Stephen Myers, a trained chef. There’s an Outdoor Inns lodge on the site which is located around a five second walk away from the pub, which can’t be bad at all. There’s not much else within five miles in terms of food and drink, so it’s very fortunate indeed that the Crossings is offering such decent meals.
My first meal was the steak pie, which is always something of a risk as it can be bought in and of poor quality with lots of gristle. However, I was delighted to note that it was entirely packed with chunks of steak which were tender and moist, this was what I would consider a proper pub meal. It’s not fancy, but it’s of a high quality and it tastes good, which is all I can ask for.
Liam went for the cumberland sausages and when Stephen came to visit the table he mentioned that it was from one of the pigs at his farm. This is very much the ‘farm to fork’ philosophy that he promotes and the quality was again high.
Ross’s burger was also made from a cow that lived down the road.
The dining room area is separate from the main bar, so it feels like a different space.
There’s a large covered area which gives some additional space.
There are several darts boards around the pub, this is the same room as the previous photo.
Day two we went back again. My second night’s main course, the beef rendang curry. Usually with curry it arrives with plenty of sauce and not much meat, but it was the other way around here with tender beef which melted in the mouth.
I normally go for quite light desserts, but I had had a busy day of walking and felt the need for something more substantial. When the staff member said that the crumble of the day was rhubarb, which is my favourite (other than perhaps a combination of rhubarb and blackberry) then that made that decision easy.
Stephen mentioned how busy the pub is at the minute, so reservations are highly recommended. I think they’d always try and squeeze lodge customers in (and ultimately they could eat at the lodge since it’s five seconds away) but best to book just in case.
And a pool table. Not everywhere can have bar billiards tables, I get that 🙂
And this is how far visitors to the lodge have to walk to the pub. Also note that rather lovely rainbow, it was all very peaceful.
