Norton Disney Pubs Walk
1 Leave the Green Man pub and the cabins by the public footpath at the rear of the site where the Disney Dog Field is advertised.
2 Follow the footpath over the bridge all the way until it meets the road by the old quarry workings, then follow the road into Stapleford.
3 Follow the road until the junction at Beckingham Road, turn left to take the footpath leading up to Stapleford All Saints’ Church.
4 Take the footpath out of the back of the churchyard, turn right to cross the large concrete bridge.
5 Continue straight along the track until you reach the road, turn left here into Clay Lane towards Carlton le Moorland.
6 At the next road junction turn left and take a footpath immediately to your right [if blocked, follow alternative route below). Keep left through Manor Farm and follow the path, which becomes a road to the T junction.
7 Turn left and then immediately right into Church Street. The White Hart pub is on your right.
NB, if the footpath is overgrown return to the T junction and keep straight ahead into Carlton le Moorland. Follow the road round to the left and then turn right into Church Street.
Pub 1. White Hart – Carlton-le-Moorland. Located next to the village’s church, this pub was built in the sixteenth century and is now entered from the rear, with the previous front door having been bricked up. There’s a large beer garden and a cosy bar area with a long conservatory. Food is served at the pub and there are usually two real ales available.
8 Leave the pub and then walk past the church, crossing over to follow the public footpath which runs between two houses.
9 Walk down this footpath to come out onto Broughton Road and turn right to the crossroads before turning left onto Bassingham Road.
10 Follow the separate path to the side of the road into Bassingham itself.
11 When into the village turn go straight on at the first crossroads (in picture above) and the Bugle Horn Inn is on your left
Pub 2. Bugle Horn Inn – Bassingham. This Good Beer Guide listed pub has a traditional feel to it, with two distinct bar areas. There are usually three real ales available, alongside several from Beavertown Brewery which form the modern keg selection. Food is keenly priced and the pub has been serving customers since the seventeenth century.
12 Turn left when leaving the pub continuing along Lincoln Road, then turn left into Eastgate
13 There’s an information board on this small green about the village’s history.
14 Turn right at the junction, with the Tall House being visible ahead. The pub is further down this road, on the right hand side.
Pub 3. Five Bells – Bassingham. The pub was built in 1815, although it appears to be older given the interior decoration which is designed to give the venue an olde worlde charm. There are hops above the bar, numerous interesting old signs and a painting of Winston Churchill above the fireplace. It offers food and drink, with four real ales usually available.
15 After visiting the pub, retrace steps back to the Tall House and turn right onto the High Street.
16 At the junction, follow the road round to the right as it becomes Newark Road.
17 Then look for the public footpath to the right which crosses the River Witham and then joins Clay Lane.
18 When reaching Clay Lane, turn left and follow the road until returning into Norton Disney.
19 When arriving into Norton Disney, turn right onto the Main Street and continue back to the Green Man pub.
Pub 4. Green Man – Norton Disney. There’s a detailed history of the pub on their web-site, with the pub opening as the Green Man in the early 1840s, but the name was changed to the Sportsman by 1851. From around 1909, the pub was renamed as the St Vincent Arms in honour of the local landowner Viscount St Vincent. Following a period owned by a pubco, Punch Taverns, the building was sold to a private owner in 2009 when it became a free house and once again was renamed the Green Man. There’s a well reviewed food menu available, with around three real ales usually to choose from.
