Microadventures
Microadventures are a concept promoted in Alastair Humphreys’s book, which he says are “short, simple, local, cheap – yet still fun, exciting, challenging, refreshing and rewarding.” He argues that “the appeal of microadventures is that they make adventure accessible to people who may have very little outdoor experience”.
And to further quote him:
“I believe that adventure is about stretching yourself: mentally, physically or culturally. It is about doing what you do not normally do, pushing yourself hard and doing it to the best of your ability.
If that is true then adventure is all around us, at all times. Adventure is accessible to normal people, in normal places, in short segments of time and without having to spend much money.
Adventure is only a state of mind.”
This is something that I’ve discussed on my blog before, but it’s also a concept that will be appearing in some adventures at Outdoor Inns sites. Not least because most of my younger friends have full-time jobs, families and limited time, so cramming adventure into a short period seems the most sensible option.
I’m already sensing a pub meal, night hike (we used to do a fair few of these) and then a few hours sleep in a comfortable environment, what a time to be alive 🙂
